Community Safety at Risk: The Tragic Killing of a CPF Member in Kroondal
Community Safety is at Risk! In a shocking incident that has left the Rustenburg community in mourning, a Community Police Sub-Forum (CPF) member was tragically killed on Thursday, 27 March 2025, in the Ikemeleng informal settlement near Kroondal. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, has strongly condemned this brutal act.

What Happened?
Authorities found Sydney Mboweni (28) inside his Toyota single-cab vehicle, which had crashed into a neighbor’s fence. Tragically, he had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency responders arrived but could only confirm his death.
Investigators revealed that Mboweni had just finished dinner before leaving for the police station to report a crime. Moments later, his girlfriend heard gunshots. Shortly after, an unknown man arrived at her home to report an accident. Rushing to the scene, she discovered Mboweni’s bakkie wrecked against a fence, his life brutally taken.
A Hero in the Fight Against Crime
Sydney Mboweni wasn’t just any resident; he served as the Chairperson of the local CPF Sub-Forum. More importantly, CPF members play a crucial role in South African communities. These dedicated volunteers work alongside the police, constantly striving to keep neighborhoods safe from crime. Therefore, losing one of these community heroes is not only deeply concerning but also highlights the growing dangers CPF members face every day.
Furthermore, Major General Asaneng emphasised that CPFs are legally established structures created to support law enforcement. Consequently, the killing of individuals who selflessly volunteer to protect their communities is not only tragic but also completely unacceptable.
Ongoing Investigation
At this stage, the motive behind Mboweni’s murder remains unclear, and no arrests have been made yet. However, police investigations are actively ongoing. In the meantime, authorities are working tirelessly to gather evidence and identify suspects. Ultimately, they remain fully committed to ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
How Can We Protect CPF Members?
Community Safety is at Risk! The murder of a CPF leader is a wake-up call for stronger protection measures. Here are some steps that communities and security providers, such as RPS Security, can take to enhance CPF safety:
✅ Better Police-Community Coordination – Closer collaboration between CPFs and law enforcement can improve response times and overall security.
✅ Advanced Security Technology – Surveillance cameras, panic buttons, and real-time tracking can help CPF members stay safer while patrolling or reporting crimes.
✅ Increased Awareness and Support – Encouraging communities to support CPF efforts can help reduce crime and improve safety for these volunteers.
✅ Security Escort Services – CPF members should not patrol alone in high-risk areas. Security companies can play a vital role in providing backup and protection.
